Confused about buying a manual or automatic car? Let us have a quick talk about the different transmissions and their work so that we could find a suitable car for you.
Nowadays the automobile market is flooded with cars having manual automatic, semi-automatic transmission, etc, and various other features. Which gets quite a hassle and frustrating in regards to making decisions.
Today in This article we are going to talk about the differences between the transmissions and their working, pros, and cons giving you knowledge regarding the transmission, before going into the subtypes let us have a look at the basic ones & it’s working.
Manual transmission-
Working of torque converter –
The key of a modern automatic transmission is the torque converter which replaces the v clutch in manual transmission. The torque converter offers the advantage of multiplying the turning power provided by the engine. A torque converter is like a giant doughnut. The impeller and the turbine.
A torque converter consists of the 3 parts working with each other. The outermost side of a Torque Converter has the flywheel which is connected to the engine, rotates the entire structure. The rotation makes the pump push out fluid at high speed.
The fluid then makes the turbine rotate which is connected to the shaft thereby connecting to the rest of the system. Pump and the turbine haves holes in them which support the movement. In one of the holes fluid is enters thereby ejecting at the speed of the engine rotation. The fluid goes into the hole and pushes the turbine at a speed at which the fluid was ejected in. After the fluid is left with almost no energy of its own it goes to the stator which pushes it towards the pump. The energy is then transferred to the gear system. Some cars use a multiple-disc clutch operation. In this setup, a series of friction discs are placed between steel plates.
Dual clutch transmission-
DCT is heavy as it comprises a lot of moving parts and gears. Take the case of 6 gears DCT that comes with two clutches that control even and odd gear ratio with the first one getting an odd set of gear.
In DCT two transmission shafts are there which controls those gear ratios that are already divided the odd one being inside the even and longer. It also has a part named dog clutches which are close to the gear and engage when the gear ratio respective of them needs to be used.
On starting the car and firing up the engine & shifting to drive mode, ECU engages gear one. This means the First clutch will act and the dog clutch on the first gear will engage.
One who picks manual due to fuel efficiency can pick these up.DCT is the fastest transmission cause either of these alternate gear ratios (odd and even) can be pre-selected while being driven in any gear, without interrupting the torque distribution to the wheels,
Continuous variable transmission –
As per the experts and many reviewers CVT is not so useful in generating the higher output ie by revving the car could not feel speed increase but gives better efficiency than DCT As in CVT there is a pulley system giving infinite gear ratio CVT is a pulley transmission or a step-less transmission, which is an automatic gearbox that seamlessly changes through a continuous range of gear ratios. A CVT, virtually, has infinite gear ratios that can be continuously altered on the fly to offer a seamless driving experience.
Even an mm shift in the pulley means there is a new gear ratio in play giving it an infinite ratio CVT isn’t torque-dependent and uses its infinite gear ratios to transfer power to the wheels.
Automated manual transmission
The automated transmission is also called An auto gear-shift transmission which is the affordable version of automatic transmission and has been mostly seen in Maruti Suzuki, where part of its operation is automated, but the driver’s input is still required to start from a standstill and to manually change gears.
It is nothing but a manual gearbox with a hydraulically or electronically controlled denote curator. These transmissions are developed to offer driving convenience and aren’t really centered towards driving pleasure. And that’s exactly why AMTs are slow to react to throttle inputs and induce a pronounced head-nod when the car is driven with a heavy foot.
Someone who drives a car semi-automatically will use either a small gear lever with simple up or downshift changes or use paddles mounted on the outside edges of the steering wheel. A gearbox that can be used semi-automatically and includes these paddles is known to some by the informal term ‘flappy-paddle gearbox’.
DSG TRANSMISSION –
DSG TRANSMISSION refers to a direct shift gearbox commonly seen in most German cars .it is an electronically controlled dual-clutch, multiple shaft auto gearbox in either a transaxle or traditional transmission. Simply speaking DSG automates 2 separate manual gearboxes. This transmission is licensed to the Volkswagen group.
At the initial stage, DSG transmission came in transversely oriented – (an engine mounted in the vehicle so that engine crankshaft axis is perpendicular to travel direction) the first car to go in production had 6 forward speeds &1 reverse using multi-plate clutch packs.
In 2008 a 7 speed DSG came Which uses 2 single plate dry clutches of the same diameter. This type is used in smaller front-wheel-drive cars with lower torque output. Later in 2010 7 speed, DSG was upgraded to support up to 600 nm.
S tronic –
In 2008 along with the standard 7 speed DSG, as the tonic version went into production, but was initially used in certain Audi cars.
The notable difference is that this version uses 10 to 12 plates, the first is used in a larger outer clutch while the latter is in a smaller inner clutch.
In certain high-powered and sporty trim variants such as 2.0 TFSI,3.2/3.6 VR6, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters were available.
